A triathlon finish time hides a lot. Inside it are a swim that started in a crowd, a transition spent fighting a wetsuit, hours on the bike and a run on legs that didn't want to run. Triathletes know every piece of that number, and the best gifts honor the pieces, not just the total.
This guide covers gifts for everyone from a first sprint finisher to someone who just finished a full distance, and how to find the splits you'll need.
The Tri, the whole race as one bar
The Tri lays out a triathlon on one print: the swim, T1, the bike, T2 and the run as one bar, each segment sized by how long it took. Each leg gets its time and distance, and the finish time and places sit alongside. It works for sprint, Olympic, half and full distance. The race name prints as the words you type, in our own lettering. From $45.
The bar makes the race readable at a glance. A sprint finisher sees how short the swim really was next to the bike. A full-distance finisher sees the bike take up most of the day, while the transitions show as thin slices that still cost real minutes.
A quick guide to the distances
If you're shopping for a triathlete and want to follow along, these are the common distances:
- Sprint: often about a 750 meter swim, a 20 kilometer bike and a 5K run, though local sprints vary a lot.
- Olympic or standard: a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike and 10K run.
- Half distance: a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.
- Full distance: a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run.
Pool-swim sprints and off-road races change the numbers, so use the distances from the race's own results or athlete guide.
Where to find the splits
Most timed triathlons post results online with a split for each segment, including T1 and T2. Search the results by the athlete's name or bib number and copy down:
- Swim, T1, bike, T2, run and the finish time.
- Overall place, gender place and age group place.
- The bib number, the date and the race name as you want it printed.
If the results only list a finish time, the athlete's watch file usually has the segments. Ask them, or look at the activity in their training app together.
The Ride, for the bike leg or the big training day
Triathletes spend most of their training hours on the bike. The Ride draws a route from their own bike computer as a bold line of art, with the climbs found and labeled on a stage-style elevation profile and the numbers that matter: miles, feet climbed, ride time, average speed and the high point. Use it for a hilly race bike course, or for the longest training ride before a full. From $45.
The Finish, for the standalone marathon
Plenty of triathletes also run an open marathon, where the run finally gets fresh legs. The Finish draws that race from their own GPS watch: their bib with number and name, the course colored mile by mile by pace, every split, the halfway time, the elevation they climbed and the finish time. From $45.
Every Race I've Run, for the athlete who races all year
For an athlete who has been racing for years, Every Race I've Run keeps a lifetime ledger: each race with its date, city, distance, finish time and pace, personal bests at 5K, 10K, half and marathon worked out for you, and totals for races, miles, states and years. It's built around running, so it suits the triathlete who also fills the calendar with road races. From $45.
A Milestone Certificate for a first finish
For a first triathlon, the Milestone Certificate records the name, the date, the place, the details and the witnesses. Put the distance and finish time in the details, and list the friends who waited at the swim exit. From $24.
Gift ideas that pair with a print
- A race entry for next season, chosen with the athlete. Triathletes plan months ahead.
- A massage or recovery appointment for the week after the race.
- A gift card to the local bike shop for a tune-up after a season of training.
- A good towel and a transition mat. Small things, but they come out at every race.
Picking the right moment
Order after results are final, since places sometimes shift for a day or two as penalties and timing corrections are posted. For a full-distance finisher, many families give The Tri for a birthday or the holidays after the race, when the athlete has recovered and is ready to relive the day.
