First Marathon Gifts: What to Give Someone Who Just Ran 26.2 for the First Time

The Finish: Your Race Course From Your Own GPS, Colored by Your Pace, With Every Split and Your Finish Time

The first marathon is different from every one that follows. Nobody knows what mile 20 feels like until they get there. The months of training, the long Saturday runs, the taper nerves, the finish line and the stairs the next morning all happen for the first time. A gift for a first marathon should say you saw all of it, not just the medal.

The Finish, their race from their own watch

The Finish is drawn from the runner's own GPS watch. It shows their bib as they wore it with their number and name, the course in their real route colored mile by mile by pace, every split, the halfway time, the elevation they climbed and the finish time. From $45.

For a first-timer, the pace colors tell the story better than words. The careful early miles, the steady middle and whatever happened after 20 are all there in color. First-time marathoners are usually proud of those late miles, slow or not, because those are the ones they had to fight for.

Prints drawn on the real course for big-city races

If the first marathon was one of the big city races, there may be a finisher print drawn on the real course, with no GPS file needed. These show the course from start to finish, the finish time huge across the top, the bib as they wore it (number, name, wave and bib color), every split they add and their pace colored along the course. Examples include the Chicago Marathon Finisher Print, the New York City Marathon Finisher Print and the Houston Marathon Finisher Print. Each is from $45, and other city races have their own prints too.

What to gather before ordering

  • The official time: the chip time from the race results page, not the clock time over the finish line.
  • The splits: results pages often list checkpoint splits, and the watch has every mile.
  • The GPS file: for The Finish, export the activity from their watch app, usually as a GPX file. A training partner may be able to help.
  • The bib: the number, the name as printed, and the wave or corral color. Take a photo before the bib disappears into a drawer.

Milestone Certificate for the first finish

A first race finish is one of the moments the Milestone Certificate was made for. It records the runner's name, the date, the place, the details and the witnesses. For a first marathon, the witnesses are the people who stood at mile 18 holding a sign. Put them on it. From $24.

Every Race I've Run, for the start of a running life

A first marathon is rarely a first race. There were 5Ks and probably a half marathon along the way. Every Race I've Run sets every start line in a refined ledger: each race with its date, city, distance, finish time and pace, personal bests at 5K, 10K, half and marathon worked out for you, and totals for races, race miles, states and years. Given now, it marks where a running life began. From $45.

The Streak, for what comes next

After a first marathon, some runners feel a little lost without a training plan on the fridge. A few start a run streak, running at least a mile every day. If yours does, The Streak shows every day as a square, with 100, 365, 500 and 1,000 days in brass and the count set huge. Save it for later, at the first big milestone. From $45.

Gifts for the week after

The days after a first marathon involve a lot of walking down stairs sideways. Practical gifts land well:

  • A massage appointment a few days out, once the worst soreness eases.
  • Comfortable recovery sandals or slides, in a size you're sure of.
  • A good meal they don't have to plan or cook.
  • A medal hanger or shadow box for the medal and bib.
  • A handwritten note about watching them finish. They'll keep it longer than anything else.

Timing

Hand over a card on race day and order the print that week, once results are final. The print arriving a couple of weeks later becomes a second celebration, right about when the runner comes down from the high and starts missing it.
