For a lot of families, the Indianapolis 500 is less a race than a holiday. Same weekend, same cooler, same seats as last year and the year before. People who go every May tend to measure time by the race: the year it rained, the year the rookie won, the year it came down to the last few feet. A gift for one of them works best when it starts from one of those years.
Indianapolis 500 finish prints
Each of our Indy 500 prints shows the race at the moment the winner took the checkered flag: the real track, the winner at the line, every car on the lead lap placed where it was when the flag fell, and the rest of the field listed underneath. It is all filled in from the published race records. You can add a message, and if they were in the stands, the turn and row they sat in, and we mark the spot. Each one is from $45. These are the races available:
- 1982, Gordon Johncock: Johncock held off a charging Rick Mears by 0.160 seconds, then the closest finish in Indy 500 history.
- 1992, Al Unser Jr.: Unser held off Scott Goodyear by 0.043 seconds in a cold, crash-filled race.
- 2006, Sam Hornish Jr.: Hornish passed rookie Marco Andretti on the front stretch just short of the line and won by 0.064 seconds.
- 2011, Dan Wheldon: rookie J. R. Hildebrand led into the final turn of the 100th-anniversary race but hit the wall, and Wheldon drove past him on the run to the line for his second win.
- 2014, Ryan Hunter-Reay: Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves swapped the lead in a six-lap shootout after a late red flag, and Hunter-Reay won by 0.060 seconds.
- 2016, Alexander Rossi: the rookie won the 100th running by stretching his fuel over the final 36 laps and coasting across the line nearly empty.
- 2026, Felix Rosenqvist: Rosenqvist passed David Malukas in the final yards of a one-lap shootout and won by 0.023 seconds, the closest finish in the race's history.
How to pick the right year
Start with a year they were there. Regulars usually remember every race they attended, and the ones with a dramatic finish are the ones they retell. If they were at one of the races above, choose it and add their seats, written the way they would say it, like Turn 3, Row 22, or the main straight near the finish line.
If you can't find a year they attended, go by the story. The 2011 race is the one every fan brings up when someone says a race is over before the last lap. The 2016 race suits anyone who likes a strategy win. The 2026 finish is the newest and the closest, a good choice for a fan who was at the Speedway this past May.
For a family that has gone together for decades, consider one print per person or one per generation. Each person's seats can be marked on their own copy, and the set tells the family's history at the track.
Track Bucket List, for the fan who goes beyond Indianapolis
Many Indy regulars also make trips to other tracks: a short track on a summer weeknight, a superspeedway in the spring, a road course in the fall. The Track Bucket List shows thirty-seven American race tracks, Indianapolis among them, from the 2.66-mile superspeedway to the quarter-mile bullring, each drawn to its own shape and all to one scale, with the city, state, length, shape and banking. The tracks they have been to are drawn as a green ribbon. From $45.
For fans who also follow road racing around the world, the Circuit Bucket List does the same for forty great road-racing circuits, current and classic, drawn to one common scale. Indianapolis is on it too. From $45.
Race Cars Through the Years
Indianapolis has always been a place where race car design changes in front of the crowd. Race Cars Through the Years tells that story in sixteen real U.S. patent drawings from 1952 to today: rear-engine open-wheelers, the first wings, ground effects, the full-face helmet, the head-and-neck restraint and the energy-absorbing wall, each marked with its year. From $45.
For the racer in the family
If the person you are shopping for races karts, midgets or late models, The Checkered Flag gives their own win the same treatment as the 500: you choose the track or give your local oval's length, type the results with the gaps, and we draw the winner at the line and every car on the lead lap in place. From $45.
Budget and timing
Every print here starts at $45. For a birthday or Christmas, one race print is plenty. For a bigger gift, pair the race they attended with the Track Bucket List. The race is in late May, so if you want a print of this year's race ready for a Memorial Day party next year, there is plenty of time; for Christmas, give yourself room in December.
Our prints are independent keepsakes made from published race records. They carry no series, track, team or driver logos and are not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
